A Brief History of Bodyboarding by Josh C

Bodyboarding has Ancient Polynesian Roots.  Originating in the Polynesian triangle or perhaps on the Pacific coast of Peru and outlying islands, its origins stretch back thousands of years.

Recorded in "Captain Cooks voyages around the world" (from 1777) are etchings and descriptions of Pacific islanders riding the waves  on wooden body boards (called paipos).

After western colonialists banned surfing in Hawaii it was practiced "illegally" and clandestine. Centuries later, attitudes by colonial powers loosened and surfing went global with Duke Kahanamoku.

The Duke was an Olympic swimmer and surfer widely attributed to introducing surfing to Australia and the US in the early 1900s.

From that point surfing in all its forms spread across the world.

The modern bodyboard was created by off beat inventor and surfer Tom Morey in the 1970s. He named it the "Boogie Board".

The 1980s saw a global explosion in the sport whilst the 90s saw the riders inventing new tricks and pioneering waves deemed unsurfable on stand up boards due to steepness and danger.

A professional bodyboard world tour was set up in the 90s hitting its zenith by the early 2000s.

Bodyboarding is currently enjoyed by millions of people globally of all ages and backgrounds.

Some enjoying pushing the limits on outer Atolls and others happily playing in the white water.

It's all part of the stoke!

We have to thank the pioneers and early riders for paving the way enabling us to enjoy waves on bodyboards today in the cold Scottish waters thousands of miles away from the sports roots in the Pacific island chains.
